San Francisco, CA — Two people were killed and one person was seriously injured when a driver fleeing from a police traffic stop crashed into a vehicle in San Francisco’s Mission District on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred at the intersection of 21st Street and South Van Ness Avenue at approximately 8:00 a.m. About 7:45 a.m. police responded to a call of shots fired from a black Chevrolet Impala near the Valencia Gardens housing project. About five minutes later, police officers saw a vehicle matching that description and tried to pull it over, but the driver took off when the officers got out of their car. The Impala ran through two intersections before it crashed into a white Toyota, killing a passenger in the Toyota and a pedestrian standing at the corner. The driver of the Toyota was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The pedestrian who died was identified as Francisco Gutierrez, age 26, and the passenger was a female in her mid-20s. The driver of the Impala only suffered minor injuries in the crash; he was arrested and taken to the hospital to be treated. Police searched his car and found a gun.
